Visiting Constance on Lake Constance, Germany

Constance is a university town at the western end of Lake Constance in southern Germany. The city is home to the University of Constance and was the seat of the Roman Catholic bishopric of Constance for more than 1,200 years.

Already at the end of the 2nd century BC Celts settled in the area of today's Niederburg. Under Emperor Augustus, the area around Lake Constance was conquered for the Roman Empire shortly before the turn of the century and henceforth belonged to the province of Raetia.

A little later, a small settlement arose in the area of the Münsterhügel. There are also some indications of Roman settlement north of the Rhine in today's city area. It is not known for sure what the name of the settlement on the Münsterhügel was. In the Geographike Hyphegesis of Claudius Ptolemy (around 160 AD), however, a settlement called Drusomagus is mentioned which a group of researchers identified in 2010 as today's Constance. The first stone buildings were erected here in the 2nd century.

Constance is a beautiful and descriptive city on Lake Constance. There is much to see all around. A stay of several days is worthwhile here.
